Softball Alumni, Heidi Elnora, designs a red carpet gown for country singer Sara Evans

Elnora is a SCAD softball alumni and a very successful wedding dress designer. She is a 2002 graduate of SCAD in fashion design, was a contestant on the 2005 season of Project Runway, owns two store one in Birmingham and one in Atlanta, and her dress designs sell in boutiques all across America.

Birmingham wedding gown designer Heidi Elnora Baker needs a pen.
She has to scratch off the No. 1 "to do" on her bucket list -- to design a red carpet gown for country singer Sara Evans. Evans, who lives in Birmingham with husband and former University of Alabama quarterback Jay Barker, wore a Baker design to the 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday in Las Vegas.
"I'm incredibly honored and humbled," Baker said of Evans wearing her dress. "I told my mom that it was one of my proudest moments."
Evans met Baker at the February kick-off party for Birmingham Fashion Week, which Baker started. During the event, Evans announced to the crowd and to Baker that she wanted Baker to design her dress. Baker was shocked.
Baker said she sketched 12 designs in February and Evans selected the one she liked best -- a one-shoulder sheath gown, fitted through the hips with a high slit on a princess seam. Baker said she wanted the dress to highlight Evans' legs.
Website chatter was buzzing Monday, saying Evans pulled a "Jolie" on the red carpet, in that she imitated Angelina Jolie's sexy stance from the 2012 Oscars. Evans even joked and did her best Jolie impression during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
Baker said the dress was designed well before Jolie's Oscar debut on Feb. 26.

"We didn't change the dress because of Angelina Jolie," said Baker, who appeared in Season 2 of "Project Runway" and now runs her own wedding gown line, Heidi Elnora. "Sara has worn slits before. That's what she wanted and that's what she got. That's a one-time Sara Evans special."
Although the silk taffeta gown appears pink with silver accents in photos, Baker said it's actually coral with gold accents. "Online does not do it justice," Baker said. "If you could see it up close, it's stunning."
After seeing the dress on Evans Sunday night, Baker texted Evans' stylist, saying, "Perfection. Love, love, love."
Evans' stylist texted back: "Phenomenal," Baker said.
Baker said she created the dress in two weeks and had three fittings with Evans, whom she said was a joy to work with during the process. Evans was nominated for "Female Vocalist of the Year'' but did not win.
Baker said she listened to Evans' "A Little Bit Stronger'' during the design process. "I wanted her to feel strong. I wanted her to feel beautiful,'' Baker said. "And I think I accomplished both of those things.''
Up next for Baker is to continue to design wedding dresses and mark off more items on that bucket list.
"I want to one day have my own magazine. I want to win the up-and-coming designer award at my college (Savannah College of Art and Design), which is given by Andre Leon Talley. And I want (my designs) to be in stores ... in each state," Baker said. "We are in 13 stores in 10 states so far. I've got a long way to go."

Long Balls Featured as SCAD Takes Two of Three

SCAD had a homerun derby this weekend.  Taking two of the three games against conference rival St. Thomas kept the Bees in first place in The Sun Conference and raised their overall record to 19-2.  It just does not get much better than that.

Game 1 Results

St. Thomas came into Savannah with a 7-18 record, but surprised our Bees by winning the first game of a 3-game series.  Kiara Boccia took her first loss of the year (3-1).  Boccia gave up four earned runs in her first three innings.  Olivia Kline, in relief, gave up two unearned runs in her 1.1 innings of work.  At the end of five innings SCAD found itself down 6-1 - the one run coming on a Nirana Singh homerun in the Bees' first inning.

The lead was too much to make up, although the Bees added one run in the fifth and sixth innings.  Singh and Kylie Rash went 3-4 and matched RBIs with one apiece.  Final Score - Bobcats 6, Bees 3.

Game 2 Results

Game 2 of the series was all SCAD.  Sydnee Schorr pitched a complete game to raise her overall record to 7-0.  Homeruns were on SCAD's agenda as Jessaca Spears hit one in the first with Kylie Rash on base after singling.  Going into the bottom of the fourth the score was 3-2 in favor of the Bees.  However, the game would soon be decided in a big way in the Bees' half of the inning.

SCAD sent ten batters to the plate in the fourth.  The big blow of the inning was a Jessaca Spears grandslam homerun.  Spears ended the game with two homeruns and six RBIs.  The score after four innings was 10-2 Bees.  The 8-run rule came into play as Schorr held the lead after five innings allowing no further damage.

Game 3 Results

The rubber game found Sam White on the mound for the Bees.  After one inning the score was tied at one with each team scoring unearned runs.  The score remained at one apiece until the fourth when the Bees scored four runs.  After a Briana Mateo single Nirana Singh connected with her second homerun of the series.  But that was not the end of the power surge.  After a Kylie Rash single and a Jessaca Spears' walk, Olivia Kline joined the homerun marathon by hitting a 3-run shot.  At the end of three, SCAD 5, St. Thomas 1.

But the Bees were not quite through.  In their 5th inning they had their biggest scoring output.  After a Mateo single Nirana Singh hit her third homer of the series for two more RBIs.  Kylie Rash kept the hit parade going with a single.  After a Jessaca Spears' walk, up stepped Olivia Kline, and, you guessed it, she hit her second homerun of the series for three additional RBIs,  After four innings SCAD held a 10 to 1 lead.  Once again the 8-run rule came into play and SCAD won the series giving White her fourth win of the year against one loss.

All in all SCAD had 7 homeruns accounting for 15 of their 23 runs scored in the series.  It was a great offensive output for the Bees who raised their record to 19-2 overall and 7-1 in The Sun Conference.  Way to go Bees!!
