The Sun Conference Tournament Champs

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Jaime Voelkel and Dominica Jordan combined to drive in five runs and Kristen Curette struck out nine as the Savannah College of Art and Design defeated St. Thomas (Fla.) University 7-1 in the championship game of the 2010 The Sun Conference Softball Tournament Sunday (May 9) afternoon at the Diamond Plex.

The Bees won their second consecutive tournament title as they won their sixth consecutive game as they improved to 35-15. SCAD also earned its fifth trip in the past six seasons to the NAIA National Championship, which will be held May 20-26 at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex in Decatur, Ala.

Softball becomes the seventh SCAD team to qualify for their respective national tournament this season. Men’s golf, men's and women's swimming, women’s tennis and volleyball have all advanced to their NAIA tournament while the men’s lacrosse team qualified for the MLCA Division II national tournament.

SCAD broke open the game with five runs in the fourth inning against St. Thomas starter Bianca Isolino. Carleigh Shannon and Curette started the uprising with infield singles and Courtney Mienkina walked to load the bases. Shannon and Curette each came around to score on Voelkel’s double to give the Bees a 2-0 lead. SCAD made it 4-0 when Mienkina and Voelkel scored on Jordan’s two-out double. The Bees closed out the scoring as Krista Ross contributed a RBI single.

St. Thomas got a run back in the fifth on Tina Diaz’s ground out, but SCAD would score two more runs in their half of the inning. Voelkel drove in a run with her second double of the game and the Bees scored the other on a bad throw.

Curette improved to 10-2 as she allowed just three hits in the complete-game effort.
